Crafting a Witch’s Broom
Create a Witch’s Broom from Foraged Materials
During a fall hike, bring along a box or bucket to gather materials. Depending on your location, materials will vary. Here in the PNW, I find lots of mixed greenery, twigs and weeds. These materials work well for creating a witch’s broom or fall centerpiece.
Gather Materials:
box or bucket, garden snips, handsaw
collected materials: grasses/weeds, sticks, twigs, etc.
zip ties
branch (4-5ft long)
black cotton fabric
light thread
rubber bands
Step 1
Gather natural materials (grass, twigs, weeds, etc.) roughly 2ft long. Gather in a bunch, keep in mind you want straighter pieces that work will work well in a broom.
Step 2
Bundle and tidy your broom materials. Remove any leaves, flowers or side branches. Create bunches using rubber bands. Cut the banded ends straight across.
Final Steps
Using your large branch, gather bunches around the end of the broomstick. Line them up about 6 inches from the end of the stick. Use large zip ties to connect and make one long bunch around the bottom. Tightly zip tie together, add 1-2 more bands to hold. Snip away rubber bands.
Tear strips of black fabric (2 inches) to make rustic ribbons around the broom. Use strips to hide zip ties remaining. Snip ends and push under wrappings.
